The Academy Awards ceremony in February. But its effects were felt in September at the big international film festivals. The Venice Film Festival, which usually premieres the cream of the crop of forthcoming Hollywood films, had only a handful of American films on its roster this year. And in Toronto, where the Oscar winners are often apparent even before the movies are released in theaters, there were no clear front-runners for next year's awards.
