We’ve grown up with some popular food fables which in reality are just that- fables. We tell you the facts, as they are.

Fable:

Nuts increase cholesterol.

Fact-

The truth is far from it. Nuts actually decrease cholesterol levels. If you eat a small quantity of nuts everyday, they reduce the risk of ailments such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Nuts are a powerful antioxidant which slow the ageing process. The only type of nuts to be avoided are the deep fried and salted variety!

Fable: Red wine is good for the heart.
Fact: That’s just half the truth! Research has proved that people who drink moderate amounts of wine live longer than those who don’t. And we specify again- only wine and no hard liquor. Wine is a good antioxidant which is highly protective. Your best bet will be Pinot Noir, which has the highest number of antioxidants.

Fable: Frozen fruits and vegetables contain less nutrients.
Fact: When you’re picking up vegetables from the supermarket, it’s healthier to opt for the frozen variety than the so called ‘fresh’ variety. According to research, fresh vegetable lose anything between 10 to 50 per cent of their minerals. On the other hand, when they are frozen, they retain the nutrients.

Fable: Peanut butter is bad for health.
Fact: Yes, a large amount of peanut butter will make you pile on the calories. But if eaten in moderation, it will actually do you some good. Peanut butter is rich in Vitamin E, fibre, copper, calcium, iron, magnesium, folate, zinc and proteins. So eating a spoon of it everyday will actually lower your blood pressure!

Fable: Chocolates should be avoided completely.
Fact: Chocolates are rich in flavonoids and antioxidants which reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. So eating about three bitter chocolates a month is actually healthy for you! And of course, we already know about the good mood chocolates put you in!

Fable: Coffee has no positive effect on the body.
Fact: It is true that coffee is loaded with caffeine and is addictive. However, this beverage has a number of benefits. Cofffee flushes the system out thereby reducing the chances of you getting kidney stones. Also, it is a rich source of antioxidants which lifts your mood.
